8. Dorisa Observatory

 

 

Dorisa Temple is known as the first temple in Silla, founded by Goguryeo’s Ado (阿道, ?~?) monk in 440 (the 24th year of King Nulji’s reign of Silla). Around 417, the 14th year of the reign of King Nulji, the 19th king of Silla, when Ado was on his way back from Seorabeol, he came to this place and saw peach blossoms and plum blossoms in full bloom even though it was winter. He built a temple there and called it Dorisa Temple.

In 1976, while dismantling and restoring the Buddha’s stupa, a gilt-bronze hexagonal sarira box (National Treasure No. 208) and a piece of Buddha’s sarira were discovered and are currently consigned to the Jikjisa Seongbo Museum. There is the Hwaeom Stone Pagoda, which is National Treasure No. 470 as a cultural asset, a bronze statue of Ado (newly built in 2002), a pagoda of Buddha, a historical monument to Ado, and a painting of a painting from the late Joseon Dynasty.
