In the future, fans of the Korean professional baseball KBO league will be able to watch games through TVING, an online video service (OTT). Until April, you can watch it for free on TV, but from May, you have to watch it through an advertising plan of 5,500 won per month.
Tving announced on the 4th that it signed a contract with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) for wired and wireless broadcasting rights for the KBO League from 2024 to 2026.
The contract size is a total of KRW 135 billion over 3 years, which is the largest in domestic professional sports history, far exceeding the KRW 110 billion over 5 years of the previous contract, a telecommunications and portal consortium.
Through this contract, Tving will hold domestic wired and wireless live broadcasting of all KBO League games and major events in the new media field, video on demand (VOD) streaming rights, and broadcasting rights resale business rights until 2026.
KBO League viewers will be able to watch KBO League games only by paying for a TV ticket. Through the ‘Advertising Standard’ plan released today, you can watch all KBO League games for the lowest price of 5,500 won per month.
To commemorate the launch of the advertising plan, TVING is also offering the benefit of being able to use TVING for 100 won for a month.
Instead of charging KBO League broadcasts, TVING will allow the production of short-form content using baseball broadcast videos and will sequentially introduce various KBO League-specific contents.
For the previous five years, the use of KBO League video materials was prohibited, making it impossible for baseball fans to create videos or ‘GIFs’.
TVING allows baseball fans to use shorts (short videos) of less than 40 seconds. The plan is to attract new baseball fans by allowing the production of various ‘memes (online trending content)’ and GIFs.
In addition, TVING will operate the ‘KBO League Special Hall’ starting from the 23rd of this month, the opening day of the KBO League regular season, and enhance accessibility through home team settings and push alarm functions.
‘Tving Talk’, a chat function for party-style viewing, and a ‘time machine function’ that allows you to rewatch key scenes you missed, such as home runs or stolen bases, will also be introduced.
TVING selects one game every week and is also preparing ‘TVING Super Match’ content, which provides a preview show before the game, a review show after the game, and in-depth interviews with coaches and players.
A TVING official said, “With our unrivaled content production know-how and differentiated sports broadcasting capabilities, we will provide a stable broadcasting service and put our sincerity into content that can satisfy the baseball fandom.”
