In order to strengthen support for low-income crisis households, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho Gyu-hong) will invest 358.5 billion won in the emergency welfare budget by relaxing the criteria for emergency welfare support in 2024 and increasing the livelihood subsidy.
Emergency welfare support is a system that quickly provides livelihood, housing, and medical care to low-income people who have difficulty maintaining their livelihood due to crisis situations such as loss of income due to unemployment or serious illness requiring hospitalization.
The income and financial asset standards for those eligible for emergency welfare support have also been improved, based on a single-person household. The income standard will be reduced from KRW 1,558,419 per month in 2023 to KRW 1,671,334 or less in 2024, and the financial asset standard will be KRW 8,077,000 in 2023. (Actual financial assets) has been increased from below to below 8,228,000 won in 2024, making it possible to support more households in crisis.
The livelihood support payment to be paid in 2024 was increased from 623,300 won per month in 2023 to 713,100 won per month, an increase of 89,800 won for a single-person household.
For fuel costs, 150,000 won per month is provided during the winter season (January to March and October to December) to households eligible for emergency support who receive livelihood and housing support.
To expand emergency welfare support, the budget was increased by KRW 43 billion (13.6%) from KRW 315.5 billion in 2023 to KRW 358.5 billion.
