The place of registration is a concept that replaces the ‘original address’ of the now-abolished Family Registration Act. Parents can freely choose their desired address at the time of birth, and the person can change it at any time. For those born before 2008, the domicile of family register will be registered as the place of registration. Let’s find out how to check the current registration base and how to change the new registration base.
Utilization and purpose of registration base
The registration standard serves as a standard for determining the local jurisdictional family court when proceeding with family relationship registration non-litigation cases such as name change, correction of family relationship register, permission for creation of family relationship registration, etc., and also serves as a standard for identifying the parties themselves. It is also used to link the previous family registration law with the current family relationship register.
For this reason, the address on the resident registration or the actual address of residence and the place of registration are conceptually different. Please consider all of these functional uses when setting the registration standard.

Check once more on the next screen whether the registration base you entered is correct and click the [Submit Now] button at the bottom to complete changing the new registration base. You may also be notified of the progress results via SMS or email.

There is also a way to change the registration base by visiting in person or submitting the report by mail. In the report, write your name in Korean and Chinese characters and also write your resident registration number.
Then, follow the method introduced earlier and write down the current registration base by searching documents such as the family relations register, write down the new registration base you want to change in order, and then enter the address on your resident registration. Finally, document entry is completed by writing down the name and resident registration number of the reporter and submitter.
If you submit the completed report along with a copy of the basic certificate from the family relationship register and your ID card, the change of registration base will be completed. If the report is submitted by an agent rather than the reporter, identification of both the reporter and the agent is required, and when submitting by mail, a certificate of signature or seal must be additionally attached. If the contents can be checked electronically, it can be omitted.
