① The English name on the passport is a transliteration of the Korean name into Roman letters (English alphabet).
② In principle, Korean statements should be written according to the Romanization system of the Korean language.
③ In principle, English names should be written as appendixes, but hyphens (-) between syllables are permitted. (Example: GILDONG, GIL-DONG)
④ It is permitted to continue using the English name with spaces in the previous passport.

2. Things to check when applying for first passport issuance
① The English name on your passport serves as a standard for identity verification overseas and changes are strictly restricted, so you must be particularly careful and write it down accurately.
② If there are no special reasons for the English surnames among family members, please check and match the English surnames of family members that have already been issued.
③ When writing a Korean name registered in the family relationship register in English, an English name that is outside the transliteration of the Korean name cannot be written, and the transliteration must be written accurately (e.g. Joseph → JOSEPH(×)).
④ Even if a passport is issued because the agent entered the English name incorrectly, changes to the English name are strictly restricted and the passport holder must bear the resulting disadvantages.
3. In cases where a change in English name is permitted pursuant to Article 3 2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Passport Act (change of English name in passport, etc.) (permission for change of English name from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is required)
① If the English name in the passport clearly does not match the pronunciation of the Korean name
② If you have used an English name that is different from the English name on your passport overseas for a long period of time for reasons such as employment or study abroad and wish to continue using that English name.

③ When a family member leaves the country together for reasons such as overseas travel, immigration, or studying abroad, and it is necessary to match the English surname written in the passport (hereinafter referred to as “English surname”) to the English surname written in the passport of another family member.

④ When trying to add, change, or delete your spouse’s English last name from the English last name in your passport.
⑤ When the spelling of the English name in the passport has a clearly negative connotation

– In addition to the matters stipulated in paragraphs 1 and 2, matters necessary for correction and change of the English statement shall be determined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
